Marine energy could be major UK supplier – and big Scots industry

Marine energy has the potential to supply 15-20 per cent of the UK’s electricity, according to a new report, although its authors warned that it would take a major government investment to turn the plan into reality.

The renewable energy resource – which harnesses waves and the tides to generate power – is still at a fledgling stage but is predicted to become a major Scottish industry in years to come. Tom Delay, chief executive of the Carbon Trust, which compiled the report, said: “We are putting out a positive message that marine power can work, but we admit that it will be very hard.”
