As doomsday scenarios go, “peak oil” is pretty frightening. It’s not as dramatic as, say, an asteroid hurtling in from space.
But with gasoline at $4.25 a gallon and our economy in shambles, it’s gaining a sobering amount of currency.
Peak oil is a theory, a year ago on the conspiratorial fringes of the Internet, that now is starting to sound more credible. It posits that all of the easily attainable crude oil has been pumped from the earth, and that the supply-demand chain has been permanently warped.

They range from economic devastation and the tipping of the geopolitical axis on the mild end to food wars, social chaos and mass human die-offs on the nasty end.
All of a sudden, carpooling doesn’t sound like too big of a sacrifice.
