James Howard Kunstler talks about suburbia as the thing that deprives us of the ability to “live in a hopeful present.” We are a nation, he says, of places not worth caring about.
In this TED talk, he makes a case for the need for better places, for public spaces that are inspired centers of civic life and the physical manifestation of the common good. Kunstler is one of the most outspoken critics of sprawl and believes the end of inexpensive oil will force America to return to smaller-scale, agrarian communities.
