Korean Firms Consume Too Much Energy

Korean manufacturers are consuming too much energy compared with the value added they produce, research shows.

According to the Korea Institute for Industrial Economics & Trade (KIET), Korean manufacturers take 184 tonnages of oil equivalent (TOE) to produce $1,000 worth value added. Lower TOE means it is producing more value added while consuming less energy.
The figure is much higher than the traditionally strong manufacturing centers like Japan and Germany, which need only around 100 TOEs to produce the same amount of value added.

Even the manufacturers in the Untied States, one of the most extravagant energy consumers in the world, only need 165 TOEs for production, less than Korea’s 184 TOEs.
