Kazakhstan raises 2009 uranium output target

Kazakhstan on Wednesday raised its 2009 uranium output forecast to 14,000 tonnes from 12,000 tonnes, staying on track to become the world’s largest producer this year.

Updating its statement issued earlier on the same day, state nuclear company Kazatomprom said it had produced 6,000 tonnes of uranium in the first half of 2009 and would produce 8,000 tonnes more in the second half.
Kazakhstan’s uranium sector has been in the spotlight of foreign investors in the past months after Kazatomprom’s ex-president, Mukhtar Dzhakishev, was arrested on suspicion of large-scale embezzlement in late May.

Kazatomprom, which controls a fifth of global uranium reserves, said none of its partners had backed out of existing agreements.
