The government on Sunday dismissed allegations made by some lawmakers that it is involved in “a political conspiracy” to cover up the discovery of half-a-billion barrels of oil in the Dead Sea area.
“This is rejected and unacceptable. I hope what was said is a slip of the tongue and not an ideology of thinking,” Minister of Interior Eid Fayez said in response to remarks by several MPs, who claimed the government is aware of
the existence of oil reserves but does not wish to reveal the fact.
The conspiracy theory and dreams of an abundance oil reserves have been tickling the imagination of Jordanians for years. A recent series of news items in the local press rekindled these thoughts, reporting that senior officials from Trans Global, an oil company contracted to explore for oil in the Dead Sea, said they discovered large amounts of oil in the Dead Sea area.
In a report published by an Arabic newspaper, a Trans Global official said his company has scientific proof to back claims of discovering no less than half-a-billion barrels of oil reserves in the Dead Sea area.
