Japan strives to lift nuclear image by easing rules

Japan is taking a novel approach to nuclear power security by loosening plant inspection regulations, in an attempt to reduce long shutdowns and lower costly oil imports in an industry grappling with safety scares.


Analysts say Japan’s inspections regime is stricter than the international norm and tempts data falsification by plant operators, adding that a more flexible policy could help maintain nuclear safety. Yet, a sceptical public may not be easily convinced.
