Kiwis wanting to save at the pump have few options. Driving efficiently can save up to to 25 per cent in fuel, the Automobile Association says. But this is a tough ask.
Hybrid driver Peter Neilson, who is also chief executive of the New Zealand Business Council for Sustainable Development, said some businesses wanted to purchase hybrid fleets, but were put off by the cost. Building in the purchase price, a hybrid car would compete economically against a standard 1.8 litre car only when petrol hit $4 a litre, or when the vehicle travelled 80,000 kilometres a year.
