The mystery over the shortage of gasoline at filling stations across the country seems to be deepening with the suppliers maintaining that there are no production problems or distribution glitches.
A number of filling stations said diesel and ‘Super’ petrol were particularly in short supply as stocks from Woqod (Qatar Fuel), suppliers of the petroleum products locally, were coming in infrequently.
But Al Sharq quoted an unnamed source in the refinery owned by Qatar Petroleum in Messaied as saying that there were no cuts in production at all. The capacity of the refinery was more than doubled in early 2002 at a cost of $750m.
The refinery is currently producing 137,000 barrels per day (bpd) of all kinds of petroleum products. The capacity before the augmentation was 60,000bpd and it was increased because of the rising demand in the Qatari market. Woqod is the local supplier, but it also exports the surplus, said the source.
