Avoiding catastrophic climate change is an opportunity for the UK, according to a report from the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT), but only if we adopt ambitious targets to reduce our carbon emissions from fossil fuels by 100% within the next 20 years.
As Prime Minister Gordon Brown mentioned in a speech recently, reducing emissions targets can provide great opportunities for engineering and business, potentially creating many thousands of jobs and making the UK a world leader in tackling climate change. And CAT agrees with Mr. Brown
The Powys based eco-centre has congratulated Mr Brown for his consideration of increasing targets for CO2 emission cuts from 60 to 80% by 2050. But the latest climate science shows this level of emissions is still highly likely to lead to catastrophic run-away climate change, claims CAT
The seriousness of climate change was highlighted in a recent report from the IPCC, which described climate change as “unequivocal,” with possible “abrupt and irreversible” impacts.
The CAT report zerocarbonbritain included a scenario demonstrating that we could produce all our own energy and food from within our own borders and coastal waters and switch to 100% renewable power within 20 years.
