BP, one of the biggest oil companies in the world, is also one of the world’s biggest makers of photovoltaic cells, which produce electricity from sunlight. Formerly British Petroleum, the company now has a sunflower logo and an advertising tag line, “Beyond Petroleum,” that are supposed to signal its ecological concerns. On its corporate Web site, its recently formed Alternative Energy division is prominently featured.
Announcing the formation of the division in November, BP said it planned to double its investment in alternative and renewable energies, spending $8 billion on solar, wind, hydrogen and combined cycle gas turbine power generation over 10 years.
BP is a member of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, a group of 180 blue-chip international companies that is the leading business lobby for sustainable development through economic growth, ecological balance and social progress.
