Indian media reports indicate New Delhi may be having doubts over the political viability of the $4-plus billion pipeline from Iran.
“I am realistic enough to realize that there are many risks, because considering all the uncertainties of the situation there in Iran, I don’t know if any international consortium of bankers would underwrite this,” Singh was quoted by the semi-official Press Trust of India.
Initial talks over a gas pipeline project from Iran, passing through Pakistan destined for India begin in the early 1990s.
Politics seem to be undermining prospects for Indian imports of pipeline gas from Iran just a month after a tour by Oil Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar to Pakistan and Iran appeared to advance plans for the deal. But the United States fears Iran may use money earned from the pipeline’s revenue to fund terrorism and weapons of mass destruction.
