The domestic demand for gas in India is expected to exceed the supplies despite a hefty increase in supply from private and joint venture (JV) owned field.
According to research done by Crisil, the power sector would continue to dominate the scene with a hefty 45.7% contribution to the total demand, compared with 35.4% in 2005-06.
Crisil research has projected that LNG would not meet the power sector demand and it might only be used to fulfil the peaking demand of power. However, considering the growing domestic gas supply from the Krishna Godavari basin, a large chunk of domestically produced gas will find takers in the power sector.
India will face increasing competition from Japan and China within the region for sourcing of gas.
