How humans are putting the planet in peril

Man-made global warming is producing significant change on Earth, according to a study that has put together decades of data to reveal changes that range from the loss of ice sheets to the collapse of wildlife populations.

The conclusions of the study are “extremely robust”, say commentators, and go further than the most recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report which concluded last year that human made climate warming is “likely” to have had a discernible effect.

Some 30,000 sets of data have been amalgamated to reveal a planet undergoing change that lies outside the scope of what is “natural”.

The researchers say it is unlikely that any force but human-influenced climate change could be driving all the changes; factors like deforestation or natural climate variations could not explain the observed change, which outstrips what would otherwise be possible.
