I visited Puerto Rico in the 80s when it was a great country. The 3rd world cousin of the 50 states. Interesting place and people.
I was there for National Guard Summer Camp. It was also the place I was almost killed by a white phosphorus mortar round dropping on the O.P. I had just vacated. The Puerto Rican Army was firing over the O.P. into the target range and a round fell short, bulls-eye on the Observation Post. I was about 300 meters away, going down the road in the jeep when it struck the post. Beautiful white umbrella fireball lighted up the night like midday. There would not have been much left if we had still been there. My driver was as white as the flash for a while…lol. No, I did not have to change my pants, but almost. I was a 1st lieutenant at the time, directing artillery fire unto the targets. My C.O. had just called and told me to move to another O.P.. I bought him a few drinks that weekend in San Juan! ^_^
