Heinberg: nations must prepare for life after plentiful oil

Nations may suffer severe economic, social and political effects if they remain unprepared for the time when maximum oil production is reached, according to a speaker for the Truckee Meadows Livable Communities Series.

At a minimum, people will be forced to change their lifestyles, said Richard Heinberg, author of seven books, including “The Party’s Over: Oil, War and the Fate of Industrial Societies” and “The Oil Depletion Protocol.”
The world could reach peak oil production by 2030, Heinberg said. Peak oil is when resources worldwide reach maximum potential and begin to decline. It’s not a question about whether peak oil production is going to occur, he said.

“It’s just a question of when it’s going to happen, in 2030 or 2005 or 2006 or 2010?” said Heinberg.

Half of the world’s oil comes from 100-120 large oil fields, The world’s remaining oil comes from countless small fields.
