The health services have been urged to start planning for the impact of global warming and the likely increase in the price of oil in the years ahead.
Due to the rising cost of oil-based transport, small hospitals will be a key point of access to healthcare for much of the population, it is predicted.
Bandon, Co Cork, GP Dr Philip Michael, made the comments as the five-GP practice in which he works prepares to embark on an energy use audit.
Dr Michael, who Chairs the Irish Environmental Doctors Association, told IMN that the impact of global warming and rising fuel prices on healthcare will be a huge issue in the future.
