Green’s energy policy may bring sanctions

The energy policy of the Green Party, which includes on a ban on the construction of new nuclear reactors as well as on extension of coal mining, may bring sanctions on the Czech Republic, anti-monopoly office (UOHS) chairman Martin Pecina said on Czech Television today.

Pecina told Vaclav Moravec that energy company CEZ has launched the reconstruction of some coal-fired power stations. If it had to suspend the work because of the Green Party’s energy policy, it would open itself to sanctions from the UOHS and maybe also from the European Union.

Pecina said in a press release today that the implementation of the Green Party
“Under these conditions, we cannot talk about competitive environment at all. Massive electricity imports would prevail over own production and the result would be the market of a supplier that would uncompromisingly dictate conditions to end-customers. Electricity production from renewable resources is not an adequate substitution,” Pecina said.

Moreover, the profitability of construction and operation of alternative ways of production is secured only thanks to massive subsidies from the state that put one group of producers in advantage and result in higher electricity prices.
