Most people don’t really know where their power comes from but increasingly in the Northwest it is coming from “green,” or renewable, sources such as wind, hydropower, solar power and geothermal energy.
In December, Portland General Electric signed up its 40,000th renewable-power customer. That’s more than 5 percent of its customers purchase renewable power. Only six other utilities nationwide do as well, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
