Getting Oil Companies Ready for Hurricanes

The Bush administration asked major U.S. oil companies and refiners Thursday to make emergency plans to ensure consumers can still buy gasoline if a hurricane disrupts energy infrastructure or knocks out the electricity at service stations.

“We ask that you review your company’s operations, from pipeline to gas pump, to assess and close quickly any gaps in your emergency power capabilities especially along likely evacuation routes,” Energy Secretary Sam Bodman and Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said in a joint letter to dozens of oil companies.

“We need to solve this problem now — not after a storm has struck,” they said.
