Germany attacks green energy scheme

Plans for a European system for trading renewable energy came under attack from Germany on Thursday, just days before Brussels unveils proposals to fight climate change.

Sigmar Gabriel, the environment minister, hit out at the scheme, which aims to boost green energy, arguing that it would “endanger” his country’s “successful” approach to promoting solar and wind power.
Governments, business and environmental groups are lobbying intensively as Brussels prepares to unveil the most extensive overhaul yet of the European Union’s green agenda. Member states will on Wednesday receive binding targets on renewable energy usage, along with details on cutting greenhouse gas emissions, and boosting biofuels.

The EU has staked its claim to leading the fight against climate change, but faces opposition from several quarters.

Many member states have railed against aspects of the proposals, fearing the economic pain.

President Nicolas Sarkozy of France told Brussels that parts of the plan could unfairly penalise his country and endanger European industry.

Germany and Spain are concerned the suggested trading scheme in renewable energy could damage existing national programmes designed to boost green power at guaranteed prices.
