The high cost of filling delivery trucks forces a major food bank to consider reducing its reach
Rapidly rising gas prices are forcing the Food Bank of New York City, which distributes 67 million pounds of food to different agencies annually, to consider reducing deliveries to local pantries, soup kitchens and shelters by at least half.
That is one of the options the board of the Food Bank is considering today at its meeting to deal with skyrocketing gas prices, which have contributed to the organization’s $150,000 deficit this year, its second straight year in the red.
“We have been digging into the reserves to pay for increased gas costs,” said Lucy Cabrera, the Food Bank’s executive director. “We are over budget on incoming and outgoing shipments, and that impacts the amount of food we can deliver.”
The board will consider reducing deliveries to its 1,200 food programs in the five boroughs from once a week to once every two weeks or once a month, Cabrera said.
