A coal industry spokesman this week said he was “encouraged” by leading nations’ target for greenhouse gas reductions.
At a summit of the Group of Eight industrial nations in Toyako, Japan, leaders agreed to cut greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2050, according to the Associated Press.
Stephen Gates, senior communications director for the American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity, applauded the goal, saying it seemed achievable.
“We were encouraged as an organization that the G-8 felt that strong about the technology – that this is an issue that can be solved with advanced technology,” Gates said.
The target was rejected by most developing countries, which said developed nations were responsible for the level of gases that now exists.
