Fuel prices set to cripple businesses

Hauliers in West Norfolk are calling on the Government to lower fuel duty or face a possible repeat of fuel protests staged five years ago.

Companies’ profit margins have been squeezed this year as oil prices have soared to around $64 a barrel, up 40 per cent on last year.
A spokesman for one of Lynn’s biggest haulage companies said it may join a go-slow demonstration on the roads if the situation worsens.

Smaller West Norfolk haulage businesses are also considering action, describing the situation as “devastating”.
Colin Ward, owner-operator of CW Transport and Trading, in Snettisham, said: “The price of fuel is going up and the profit margin has almost gone to zero – and I’m even contemplating packing it in.
