It’s uncertain how much cities will be able to help Hampton Roads Transit with its bills.
VIRGINIA – An unexpected spike in diesel prices has resulted in a projected $1.3 million shortfall for Hampton Roads Transit’s fuel budget, meaning local cities will be asked to pick up the tab.
While there are no plans to raise fares or cut service, it’s unclear how much cities will be able and willing to pay.
Though cities will be asked to pay more, riders could be the ones most affected. Newport News, for example, may consider cutting service, a city spokeswoman said.
HRT officials are less than enthused about asking for more money.
“I’m dreading it,” said Michael Townes, president and chief executive officer of Hampton Roads Transit. “It’s not going to be fun times.”
