Fuel prices driving up fares, surcharges

United Airlines has increased fares $5 to $10 each way on most domestic flights in response to record fuel prices, a spokeswoman said Friday.

The changes went into effect immediately, but will not affect tickets already purchased, said Robin Urbanski.

United also added a $10 fuel surcharge on trans-Atlantic flights, matching a move made this week by Delta Air Lines. “Both of these increases are to offset the rising costs of fuel,” Urbanski said.

American Airlines, US Airways and Northwest Airlines joined United in raising their surcharge, which increases to $75 each way.
