With Sasol and Total’s Natref refinery now back on stream, the sporadic fuel shortages that have afflicted parts of Gauteng over the past few weeks should ease. But for how long?
Such has been the growth of SA’s economic hub in recent years — and the boom in passenger vehicle sales — that the country’s existing inland oil-refining capacity, supplemented by Sasol’s synthetic-fuel production and refined product piped up from the coast, is only just managing to keep up with demand.
