The Group of Eight finance ministers need to consider improved energy supply security all the way from the oil well to the petrol pump when they meet this weekend in Moscow.
Concern about oil supply from Iran and gas from Russia has taken energy security to the top of the G8 agenda this year, but the entire energy system is under strain to meet growing demand.
The ministers should consider increasing strategic petroleum reserves (SPRs) of oil products like gasoline and heating oil, natural gas, and perhaps even greater refinery capacity to deal with unexpected outages, analysts say.
