Food Crisis Creeping South to Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso, southern neighbor to hungry Niger, is facing its own food crisis due to drought and locusts, government officials warned, pleading for the world community to respond quickly to prevent the situation from deteriorating.

The cry rising from Burkina has been echoed in Niger’s other Sahel neighbors Mali and Mauritania, which also saw their harvests last year severely compromised in the worst locust invasion in more than a decade.

More than a half-million people in landlocked Burkina are regularly going without food, unable to afford the higher prices demanded for the millet and sorghum that are staples of the Sahel diet.
