While many of us in developed countries will be able to adapt to these changes, those in poor countries – and even many in our neighbourhoods – will not. World starvation will be far more profound.
Should we continue our collective dependence on the automobile or eat? This question is not only a philosophical one; it is also a moral and practical one.
The solutions are obvious: buy more locally grown (especially organic) food, arrange to have it delivered (most stores now deliver), and grow our own food. While these involve more work on our part, and changes in our lifestyles, it is the only way we will be able to sustain ourselves longer-term.
Without supporting our local farms, which today only supply us with eight per cent of Vancouver Island’s needs, our security is far from certain.
