UK Farm and Environment Minister David Miliband called on Monday for agriculture to make a positive contribution to the environment, minimising greenhouse gas emissions and expanding in areas such as the production of renewable fuels.
Miliband cited the positive impact of growing energy crops that could replace fossil fuels and so cut the emissions of greenhouse gases which are believed to contribute to global warming.
Grains, oilseed and other crops can be used to make biofuels while fast growing tall grasses and trees can be burnt to generate electricity.
