BRUSSELS – Farmers should grow substantially more biofuels, like rapeseed for biodiesel or beet sugar for bio-ethanol.
This is the conclusion of an action plan by European Commission members Fischer Boel (Agriculture) and Michel (third world development and aid), according to sources in Brussels on Tuesday february 7th, 2006. The biofuels should make Europe less dependent on oil from the Middle East. At the same time, it is better for the environment.
Subsidy
Brussels is thinking about susidizing the growth of sugar for ethanol. It is also possible the granes surplus can be used to make fuels, instead of exporting it. Forestry can also be supported to supply more wood.
Europe also wants to boost production outside its own borders. Goal is primarily to help poor countries that are soon forbidden to deliver sugar to the EU. The EU is thinking about a special tariff for the import of biofuels.
