Ethanol tariff survives Senate vote

Senators reject a bid to insert a repeal of the levy into an energy bill.

The ethanol industry easily survived a challenge in Congress to the tariff that protects U.S. producers from competitors in Brazil and elsewhere.

Sen. Judd Gregg, R-N.H., proposed Wednesday to repeal the 54-cent-a-gallon tariff, arguing that it was forcing East Coast motorists to pay more to gas up their cars.
