Eskom Power Blackouts Plunge Cape Into Chaos

Massive electricity blackouts, blamed by state-owned electricity utility Eskom on “technical problems”, swept Cape Town at the weekend, depriving homes and businesses of power at the peak of the tourism season, and leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The “technical problems” at Eskom caused rolling blackouts across Western Cape, the fourth to hit the province in as many months.

The power outages could be a sign of bigger problems to come as SA’s increased demand for electricity outgrows secure supply.
