A weekly survey of spending trends at the pump from SpendingPulse, the retail data service of MasterCard, found U.S. gasoline demand rose 4.2 percent, or some 2.93 million barrels, for the week ending Aug. 17 compared with the previous week.
Demand for gasoline rose 5.7 percent versus the comparable week in 2006.
