With the cost of electricity rising, IT managers are beginning to think about energy efficiency. In this interview, Richard Sawyer, director of data center technology for West Kingston, R.I.-based American Power Conversion Corp. (APC), talks with Matt Stansberry of SearchDataCenter.com. Technologies that can save energy in the data center include clustering (sharing a group of processes among multiple users and applications) and reducing excess processors. To improve energy efficiency, IT managers aim for a higher utilization rate, increasing the percentage of machines doing work at any given time.
