Excluding energy and food, which can swing widely from month to month, “core” prices rose 0.3% in April, matching March’s rise. The Federal Reserve and economists closely look at the core inflation reading to get a sense of how prices are acting.
The second sizable increase in core prices could fan fears that rising energy costs may be starting to breed inflation throughout the economy.
