Finally, we are a long way from California, Mexico, and other areas that provide the enormous quantities of cheap vegetables (and wonderful wine!) that an era of inexpensive fossil fuels has accustomed us to. If we want supermarkets to continue trucking us lettuce and tomatoes in January, not to mention all the other delicacies we take for granted, fuel for the trucks (or the trains?) is essential.
Were we not conditioned to such complacency in this culture, we would recognize these as terrifying possibilities.
