Drivers’ Strike: How The Government Made New Enemies

MALDIVES – Male drivers went on strike for three days last week in protest at the rising cost of fuel. For three days they peacefully occupied a platform in a constant vigil.

The government responded by demonising strikers and refusing to negotiate with them. Eventually police broke the strike with the arrest of eleven drivers and the forceful clearing of the platform.
