Deterring challenges to American power

In my previous column I argued that the American invasion and occupation of Iraq was not precipitated by 9/11. Rather, it was embedded in strategic orientations and policy directions that predated the tragedy, and which aimed at preserving the post-Cold War balance of power that left the United States the undisputed superpower of the world.
