A record-setting well drilled by Chevron in the Gulf of Mexico has opened up a vast new oil province that could boost America’s domestic oil reserves by tens of billions of barrels.
Chevron said that the Jack 2 well had flowed at a rate of 6000 barrels per day in a production test that gives a green light to several recent large oil discoveries in a frontier offshore region where wells are being drilled to depths of more than 8km
“It’s extremely deep, it’s high temperature, high pressure and in tight rock.”
