D1 Oils PLC has announced it has planted over 156,000 hectares (385,500 acres) of Jatropha curcas in Africa, India and South East Asia, so far, adding 10,000 hectares planted in the last two weeks of the year’s first quarter (table, click to enlarge). The biofuel company said the majority of this increase was accounted for by planting in Africa, “with planting under contract farming arrangements in Zambia continuing to make particularly good progress.” With an expected yield of 2000 liters of biodiesel per hectare and a productive life of 50 years per tree, D1 Oils now owns a virtual biofuel reserve of around 94 million barrels of oil equivalent.
