BALTIMORE – Angry customers. Upset and frustrated lawmakers. Closed-door meetings with political leaders. Allegations of cozy relationships with state officials.
Baltimore’s Constellation Energy Group Inc. has had a rocky few weeks.
First, back in December, the energy company, parent of Baltimore Gas and Electric Co., announced an $11 billion merger with Florida-based FPL Group Inc.
Then customers were shocked by news that power prices are projected to shoot up 72 percent on average this summer for residential BGE customers. The increases are happening as a result of the removal of rate caps put in place as part of Maryland’s 1999 electricity deregulation plan.
