Colin Campbell on Peak Oil

I am pleased to introduce Dr. Colin Powel who is a world renowned geologist, oil adviser, author, and expert on Peak Oil. As fortune would have it, Dr. Campbell also wrote the introduction of my first nonfiction book, “Death of a Gas Guzzler”.

In this video Dr. Colin J. Campbell discusses world oil supplies and the consequences of Peak Oil. This is the first in a series from the New Energy Era Forum held in West Cork, Ireland recently.

I believe peak oil is real, but it always makes me laugh how the peak oil graphs show a steep cliff after the present year–even if it hasn’t happened for the consecutive years before. Doesn’t help the credibility much.

The steep graph is far more likely in my opinion as oil production will likely be correlated to the collapse of the current ECONOMIC paradigm. Who is to say how long the never ending growth fairytale can be prolonged but I wager less than a decade.

All economies are always a function of available energy.

Our current economic paradigm is dependent on growth and therefore is fully dependent on an ongoing increase of available energy.

The Roman economy was dependent on the available energy of slaves. Easter Islanders were dependent on the available energy of firewood. Societies have faced the stern laws of thermodynamics before.

As production flat lines (now) the decrease in EROEI to society (tar sands vs sweet oil) will result in a reduction of its complexity. Contraction.

Our growth dependent economic model + contraction = collapse.

Tar sands and its ilk require a complex enough society for extraction.

The EROEI of Tar sands is insufficient to support today’s complex society.

Most of the remaining oil will stay in the ground, hence steep sided future graph.

I always wondered what he was up to since he was Secretary of State…

It will force us to make very different economic decisions eventually.

Hi, i remember being upon peak oil theory a couple of years ago but i have recently watched and listened to prominent politicians suggest there is no energy crisis due to new ways of finding oil such as shale.even last night i listened to a lord say that the US would be energy independent in ten years.are these delusional rants? Just read another article about low oil production yields in azerbaijan…confused or what?
