The total number of vehicles in China is expected to reach 130 million by 2020, and demand for petroleum will hit 450 million tons, predicted Wan Gang, president of Tongji University. The development will put pressure on the nation’s energy reserves.

Research and development on clean energy alternatives have thus emerged as a top priority. Clean energy automobiles include diesel vehicles, gas-electric hybrid-powered cars and fuel cell automobiles.
