China, the world’s biggest energy user after the U.S., will receive its first shipment of liquefied natural gas from Australia next month as the country starts operating a receiving terminal for the fuel.
China wants to more than double the share of its energy produced from gas to 8 percent by 2010 to cut pollution and reduce the country’s reliance on coal and crude oil. The cargo is the first under a A$25 billion ($19 billion) supply contract with Australia. LNG is natural gas cooled to a liquid for transport by ocean tanker.
