Cape Town’s infrastructure ‘in crisis’

Cape Town’s infrastructure is in “crisis”, warns the Cape Town Partnership, with the recent electricity cuts causing “immeasurable damage to the economy” and “severely denting” investor confidence.

Speaking at a meeting of the Business Forum on Thursday, CTP chief executive and former city manager, Andrew Boraine, said: “It’s not that we have an energy crisis, it’s how we respond to it.”

The electricity crisis was a symptom of “lack of investment in economic infrastructure”.

Although the CBD has been spared much of the load shedding that has affected the suburbs and outer areas, Boraine said town-based businesses would be forced to implement energy-saving mechanisms to reduce the demand for electricity.
