Canadian school boards watch energy budgets bulge

Area school board officials are expecting a year of high energy costs — from heating and cooling their buildings, to busing school kids around.

Oil prices have risen more than 45 per cent in the past year, climbing as high as $66 US a barrel yesterday, a record high, with demand for natural gas and other fuels also up dramatically so far this year.

“We would welcome bigger increases in funding for energy because what we have to do is rob other parts of the budget because we have to keep the schools open.”
