Bush renews call for more refineries

Democrats and a moderate Republican on the Senate Environment Committee blocked a bill Wednesday that would help U.S. oil companies build or expand refineries.

But President Bush persisted, repeating his call for more U.S. refining capacity soon after the Senate Environment Committee’s vote. “We need more supply of gasoline for the sake of our consumers and for the sake of our economy, so I’m going to work with Congress to pass a bill that makes it easier for current refineries to expand and encourages the construction of new refineries,” Bush said in a speech to an economic group.
