Brunei: Oil Boom No Excuse To Waste Energy, Experts Warn Companies

With oil prices creeping towards US$100 per barrel, it appears that Brunei Darussalam stands to benefit from the boom. However, we must not neglect efforts to save energy too as many businesses that rely on it as their primary source of power will not be able to sustain themselves in the long run. Kazuhiko Yoshida from the Energy Conservation Centre Japan (ECCJ) underlined this at yesterday’s energy conference on “Promotion of Energy Efficiency and Conservation (PROMEEC)”, where he emphasised that energy conservation is the essential measure for humans to survive.
Senior Executive Engineer from the Department of Electrical Services, Hj Ismail Ptiteh, acknowledged that the global demand for energy is increasing at a faster pace than ever before. “In the last few years, the increase in energy demand has not been matched by a commensurate increase in energy supply. There is little spare capacity left for global oil production,” he said.

This, in addition to the rising oil prices, has raised the profile of energy efficiency and conservation globally. According to an authoritative 2002 report by the National Research Council, fuel efficiency improvements have saved the United States about 2.8 million barrels of oil per day. Furthermore in the East Asia region, around 20 per cent of energy consumption can be saved by 2030 through energy efficiency and conservation methods alone.

“Energy efficiency and conservation is indeed amongst the key components in the strategy towards safeguarding our future energy needs in a sustainable way without compromising economic growth and our precious environment,” noted the engineer.
